Herd Health Planning

This provides a structured approach to farm animal healthcare. Plans produced are specific to individual farms encouraging improved health and profitability and will cover all requirements of farm assurance schemes or land management contracts.

Fertility

Herd fertility is intrinsically related to production and therefore performance. Poor fertility results in increased calving index and culling rate, loss of calving pattern, reduced genetic progress and fewer calves to sell.

At the Ark Veterinary Centre we offer routine pregnancy diagnosis either manually or by ultrasound scanner. Also we are prepared to carry out fertility investigations and consultations as required where difficulties exist.

Bull Semen Evaluation And Fertility Examination

There are three components to the fertility of your herd. Most of the attention goes to the cows and external factors such as nutrition and disease management etc. Bulls are half of the equation. Our aim is to identify these subfertile/infertile bulls, giving you confidence in your bull management, allow you to reduce bull numbers and increase profits.

We can now provide you with a comprehensive fertility report giving you an indication of the potential breeding value in a normal herd-mating situation. We offer an equivalent service for tups.

Mastitis

Nutrition

Both environmental and contagious mastitis are an increasing problem for dairy cows with significant costs to the industry annually.

The disease is multifactorial in origin and we can offer mastitis investigations, both bulk and individual milk tests and somatic cell count analyses. In stock there is a wide range of products available for the treatment and control of mastitis.

Deficiencies in nutrition or trace elements can be an underlying problem in a wide range of conditions. As a practice we are able to offer nutritional advice and are keen to become involved with routine farm meetings with nutritional consultants. Facilities are available for metabolic profiling, trace element analysis and a range of supplements and boluses are available in stock as required.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is the most costly loss in housed growing cattle. Many factors may combine to cause an outbreak. We can provide full investigations both in the face of an outbreak and a historical analysis of the outbreak to determine the course of action in the current year and an action plan for next season.

This can include housing design, ventilation requirements, nutritional and vaccination advice. A wide range of vaccinations and treatments are available to deal with this common condition.

Avoid Lameness

Avoid lameness
Lameness remains a major problem in both sheep and cattle with subsequent fertility and production losses as well as increased culling rates.

We are able to provide advice on management, nutrition, housing design, preventative measures including foot-bathing and vaccination as well as treatment options for all forms of lameness.
