Kennel Cough Out break

Kennel Cough Out break

We've seen a sharp rise in the number of cases of Kennel Cough (Tracheobronchitis) in the last 2 weeks with dogs developing a 'honking' cough which can often seem and sound as though they've got something stuck in their throat.

Your dog can catch this disease from close contact with infected dogs anywhere and not just in kennels! It can cause the dog to have a high temperature and feel generally unwell. Once exposed to the disease it takes 3-10 days before the symptoms are seen.  If you suspect your dog has kennel cough please phone us for an appointment to see a vet  but leave your dog in the car when you arrive as we don't want to risk spreading the disease in the waiting room .
As with any disease, prevention is better than cure and there is an intra nasal vaccine available which is effective against the most significant causes of the disease.  It's not 100% as Kennel cough is caused by both viral & bacterial elements but it will lessen the symptoms and duration of the disease should your dog still catch it.
