Free Blood Testing 2019 UPDATE

Dec 1, 2019

The project involves analysing the four main respiratory viruses (BRSv, Pi3v, BHV-1, BVDv) and Mycoplasma bovis antibody titres and serum total protein levels from approximately 200 dairy/ dairy-bred calves across multiple farms.

There needs to be between 5-15 calves per farm. This amount of testing would normally cost you £400-450, but with the Zoetis scheme it is FREE.   Why is it of benefit to you? Pneumonia is conservatively estimated to cost approximately £1000 per heifer. The biggest loss is in the reduced yield during the first and second lactation. Each blood sample is tested for total protein which tells us whether the colostrum management on farm is sufficient. Getting colostrum management right is the first and one of the most important steps to preventing diseases in your calves. Knowing what pathogens you have on your farm can help you and your vet make better and more informed choices when preventing and treating pneumonia on your farm.  What calves are eligible for testing? 1st blood sample: taken from dairy or dairy bred calves <7days old. 2nd blood sample: the same calves are sampled at 6-8 weeks of age.  If you are interested in being part of this project please contact your vet or the practice to arrange blood sampling.  This month we have blood sampled 92 calves across fifteen different farms for the free Zoetis serology testing.  Changes to Medicine Orders As part of our ongoing endeavour to improve our services we now have an email address should you prefer to order your medicines electronically. Please place your orders at  orders@arkvetcentre.co.uk.
