There are many welfare benefits for both male and female dogs. For male dogs this includes limiting straying behaviour, especially in relation to bitches in heat as well as reducing unwanted sexual behaviour and aggression. Medically it prevents testicular tumours and reduces perianal adenoma (tumours around the anus), prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and risk of prostate tumours. For female dogs there are even more advantages; one of which being the fact it stops the bitches oestrus cycle (heat or season) which can be a stressful time for both dog and owner. Furthermore it reduces the risk of mammary tumours, eliminates false pregnancies, pyometra (infection of the uterus) and other uterine diseases.
Benefits of Neutering Your Cat:
Neutering in cats prevents occurrences such as unwanted litters, reduction in numbers of roaming cats injured or killed in road traffic collisions as well as reducing fighting behaviour, and as a result, thus a reduction in infected wounds and transmission and spread of FIV infection (feline aids virus).
